In 1926, with a view to provide standardized music education and to maintain the high traditions of Indian music, an institution was established by the great efforts of Pandit Vishnu Narain Bhatkhande and Rai Uma Nath Bali at Lucknow. The Bathkhande University of Indian Music Society was registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 in 1939. In 1948 at the time Birth Anniversary celebrations of Bhatkhande the name of the university was changed and it became known as Bhatkhande Sangit Vidyapith. The Vidyapith is an affiliating and examining body. It prescribes text books and confers certificates of Prathama, Madhyama, Visharad, Nipun and Acharya in all the three disciplines viz. Vocal, Instrumental and Dance. It has eight years course and examinations are held every year in December. After two years of study and practice a certificate of Prathma is granted. One year after the Prathama a diploma of Madhyama is granted. After further two years of study and practice Visharad is granted. Three years after Visharad, Nipun is conferred. Nipun holders get the Sangit Acharya on at least two years research work and submission of a Thesis.
